AI in Financial Services: OpenAI Designs Software With Customers, Embeds Third-Party Data

OpenAI has added to the expanding set of AI software options tailored to financial services firm: the company rolled out ChatGPT for Financial Services, which includes premium third-party financial data built in, rather than requiring connectors.

The developments came after a recent financial services push by Google Cloud, and before this week’s financial services-optimized version of Anthropic Claude, which I’ll analyze in a follow-up report. Like Google Cloud, OpenAI built the financial services software in collaboration with customers, working with investment banking firms Morgan Stanley and Evercore.

ChatGPT for Financial Services is built on the GPT‑6 Astra AI model, which OpenAI said delivers advances across three core capabilities: information retrieval, financial reasoning, and artifact generation. It can navigate and understand figures, tables, and supporting notes in financial documents.

GPT-6 Astra can synthesize and publish work into Excel, Word, and PowerPoint templates through a dedicated admin page. With company templates and style guides configured, teams can turn their analysis into valuation models, research notes, and pitchbooks in their firm’s format and style.

Deep Financial Data, Customer Partnerships

OpenAI noted that feedback from its design partners indicated that reliable access to data and quality artifact creation proved to be their top pain points; to that end, built-in data — from Daloopa, PitchBook, LSEG News, and Crunchbase — removes any  integration challenges that can arise with connectors for data access. The company said work with Morgan Stanley and Evercore will inform post training, product improvements, and expansion into other financial services categories.

Morgan Stanley said in a statement that it’s working with OpenAI to apply frontier intelligence to researching companies, developing analyses, and preparing client advice. Evercore noted that it is looking to this partnership to strengthen the insights behind the client advice it provides.

Third-party partner data is indexed and hosted by OpenAI to enable higher accuracy and new features, including granular citations, so bankers can trace figures and claims back to their sources, as well as check details while their analysis develops. It includes earnings transcripts, financial statements, company fundamentals, private companies, and more.

Customers can start working with these datasets immediately, with no connectors to set up or agreements to negotiate. OpenAI said it indexes and hosts the partner data on OpenAI infrastructure so it can optimize the ways it manages retrieval, latency, and how the data is surfaced to users.

In addition, OpenAI is offering financial services customers access to data from ChatGPT through their existing subscriptions and connectors. It’s working with S&P Capital IQ, Dow Jones Factiva, and Moody’s on shared sign-in and entitlement integrations. Providers will be able to recognize users through their ChatGPT sign-in for access to data they’ve already subscribed to.

OpenAI said its focus is on making widely used data providers — and the related MCP connectors — optimized for use in the new product. Its ecosystem includes over 50 connectors.

Security Controls

In the highly regulated financial services industry, security controls are a vital consideration. OpenAI said that, by default, customers’ business data is not used to train its models. That data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Compliance teams can export supported workspace logs through the OpenAI Compliance Platform into their existing audit and investigation workflows.

Firms can manage access to skills and apps by role and enable or disable supported app read and write actions.

ChatGPT for Financial Services is available to eligible financial institutions today.
