
Microsoft’s Copilot Cowork has been touted for its ability to automate and manage complex tasks across workflows. New features that launch tasks based on event triggers and automate tasks by using data within browser tabs bring that potential closer to fruition.
These latest enhancements, detailed in the Copilot Release Blog, follow the recent addition of several third-party software connectors that give Cowork additional breadth in terms of systems it will connect with to manage cross-workflow tasks.
Event-Triggered Tasks
Tasks with events as triggers, one of the key new features Microsoft is introducing, reflect the business reality that many if not most important tasks are not always predictable and don’t typically run on a schedule. Consider scenarios where you get pulled into a project or meeting on an impromptu basis, or a deadline suddenly requires followup that wasn’t planned or expected.
The new features let a user create event-driven tasks spanning Teams chats or channels, Outlook email, and meetings. These could be triggered by a sender, an @mention, a keyword or topic, or an event name.
An event-driven task is created by describing the trigger in plain language, which will prompt Cowork to monitor email and Teams channels for important developments, identify them as they occur, and begin creating the response. This ensures a user doesn’t miss requests, pings, or issues requiring followup. It also offloads some of the lowest-level work required to respond.
One example scenario involves creating an event-driven task for when a customer emails about a renewal in progress. Cowork can spot a message, summarize the content, and extract contractual terms and account history. It will analyze the usage trends, any open tickets with the customer, that customer’s current sentiment, then model what-ifs such as discount, upsell, or loss of customer, in Excel with a recommended path. The employee receives that detail in a brief written in their own voice, including risks, options, and next steps – plus an email summary that’s prepped for review by the broader account team.
The system sees only the detail that the user sees and it’s set by default to draft-and-approve mode – so the user decides how much autonomy each trigger is given.
Browser Automation
There’s another type of complexity that business users struggle with in their daily routine: work scattered across SaaS tools, internal portals, ticketing systems, dashboards, and sometimes countless browser tabs that they work with all day, every day.
Cowork with local browser automation can go into those tabs and work alongside the user. A user can ask Cowork to check the status of an open ticket in an IT service desk, download an invoice from a vendor portal, or pull current tasks from a project tracker and pull those into a status update, to name three examples.
That’s promising functionality, as I’m sure most will agree based on the number of the tabs we tend to keep open and toggle between. One important caveat: the functionality is specific to the Edge browser, which maintains comparatively small market share relative to Google Chrome and Apple Safari; Edge’s share is greater on desktop devices than it is on mobile devices. But for those sold on Cowork, this could emerge as a solid reason to consider or test the Edge browser.
