Microsoft’s Work IQ Gets Down to Business, and That’s What Makes Agents Useful

Microsoft has spent the past year telling customers that Copilot understands their work. Now it’s making a bigger claim: Copilot understands their business, too.

Work IQ is the intelligence layer beneath Microsoft Copilot and agents. Starting September 30, it will ground its reasoning in core business data from Dynamics 365 and Power Platform, with the public preview rolling out through October. The move pulls systems of record into the same context as email, Teams meetings, and documents. It also addresses one of the biggest reasons enterprise AI pilots stall: agents that don’t understand the business they’re supposed to serve.

Model the Business Once, Use It Everywhere

The core of the announcement is the semantic model. Teams no longer have to hand-write context for every agent. Instead, Work IQ derives meaning from what customers have already built in Dynamics 365 and Power Apps, including views, forms, and relationships, and adds a business glossary for company-specific terminology.

That matters. Every agent drawing from the same model shares a common understanding of accounts, contracts, and equipment, so answers are more consistent and far less work is duplicated. IT stays in control. Admins can exclude outdated views, switch signals on or off, and add vocabulary the system can’t infer.

As James Oleinik, Partner Director of Product Management at Microsoft, puts it, “Customers have spent years building their business expertise into business applications and processes.  With Work IQ, that investment becomes a foundation for agents — not something to rebuild for each one. The goal is simple: less time navigating software, more time getting work done.”

Microsoft’s example shows how this works. A sales lead asks Copilot which renewals need attention. An opportunity that looks healthy in Dynamics 365 Sales turns out to be at risk once Copilot connects three things: an unresolved service case, a custom equipment app, and recent customer emails and Teams conversations. The sales lead doesn’t build a report or switch between apps.

Turning Tribal Knowledge Into Reusable Skills

Finding the right data is only half the job. The more interesting piece is business skills, which are codified playbooks that pair step-by-step instructions with the context an agent needs to carry them out. A company can define a renewal-readiness process once and use it in every agent connected through the Work IQ MCP server, including agents built in Copilot Studio.

This tackles a real problem. Today, institutional know-how lives in experts’ heads, scattered documents, and prompt instructions copied from agent to agent until nobody can keep them in sync. Turning that know-how into a governed, maintainable asset is the kind of unglamorous plumbing that separates production AI from demo AI.

From Insight to Governed Action

Work IQ then closes the loop with governed actions. Copilot and agents can propose changes, route them through required approvals, and write updates back to source records, all within the user’s existing permissions. Users can escalate a case, reassign ownership, or update a contract without leaving the flow of work, and the system of record stays authoritative.

Dataverse underpins all of this. It serves as the secure store for semantic models and skills and powers the new Dataverse Ask API. For developers, the Work IQ MCP server, CLI, and coding-agent plugin bring the same approved business context into the coding environment.

Why It Matters

For CIOs, governance may be the real headline. Work IQ agents operate under Microsoft Agent 365. Responsibilities are split across AI admins, Power Platform admins, and makers, and none of it requires a new portal.

Strategically, Microsoft is pressing an advantage few rivals can match: it owns both the productivity layer and the business applications layer. That lets it reason across Outlook, Teams, and Dynamics 365 in a single request.

Final Thoughts

The industry has promised for years that users would stop navigating apps and simply state the outcome they want. Work IQ combines shared semantics, reusable skills, and governed actions, which makes it Microsoft’s most concrete step yet toward delivering on that promise. The question now is execution. Customers will need to model their businesses quickly, and usage-based billing will need to keep adoption affordable. ERP support for Finance and Operations, arriving in late October, will be the next test worth watching.
