Welcome to this Cloud Wars Agent and Copilot Update. In these discussions, I’ll be analyzing opportunities, impact, and outcomes possible with AI; today’s focus is on AI’s impact on software user interfaces, or UI.

Highlights

00:30 — I’m considering the potential decline of traditional application user interfaces, driven by the shift towards more agent-ready, Model Context Protocol (MCP)-powered architectures. Clients are increasingly interested in connecting their data sources and processes into platforms like Microsoft 365 Copilot, Claude, or Gemini. The new application architectures support portability, allowing data and processes to be integrated with existing AIs, moving away from the traditional UI-centric approach.

02:10 — MCP servers aren’t just APIs but provide context to LLMs, including data, tools, and business logic. They enable AI systems to interact directly with business systems, performing tasks like summarizing data, running automation workflows, and providing insights. Examples include using Copilot Studio as an MCP client to consume MCP servers, which are APIs wrapped with skills, replacing the need for traditional UIs.

03:04 — MCP servers allow users to interact with their applications within their preferred interfaces, such as Outlook or Gmail. These servers enable seamless integration with various business tools like marketing automation, CRM, and ERP systems. The portability of MCP servers makes them more versatile and user-friendly.

04:12 — These platforms can provide a “rent an expert” service, integrating with existing LLM-based solutions. The evolution from traditional UIs to MCP servers represents a shift from screen-based interactions to system-based interactions. This evolution is not the death of the application user interface but rather its transformation into a more versatile and intelligent system.

AI Agent & Copilot Summit is an AI-first event to define opportunities, impact, and outcomes with Microsoft Copilot and agents. Building on its 2025 success, the 2026 event takes place March 17-19 in San Diego. Get more details.
