Welcome to this Cloud Wars Agent and Copilot Update. In these discussions, I’ll be analyzing opportunities, impact, and outcomes possible with AI; today’s focus is on the three primary types of AI agents.

Highlights

00:25 — There are three levels of copilot agents: retrieval, task, and autonomous orchestration agents, each building on the functionality of the previous level.

00:40 — Retrieval agents are the easiest starting point; they focus on removing friction by providing instant answers. Examples of retrieval agents include those that find templates for corrective action plans. Retrieval agents are crucial for automating steps that cannot be automated without first surfacing the necessary instructions.

01:25 — Task agents move work forward by performing actions that would normally require manual steps, such as opening apps, clicking through menus, or sending emails. Examples of task agents include preparing briefing notes, emailing approvals, or scheduling reviews, reclaiming hours of work. Task agents start to provide real ROI by automating repetitive tasks, making work more efficient and freeing up time for more meaningful work.

02:17 — Autonomous orchestration agents are at the top of the complexity ladder, making decisions based on context and conditions, providing real-time responses. These agents evaluate context, check for thresholds, and select the right path forward without human intervention, providing decision-making inside the flow of work. An example of autonomous orchestration is monitoring data sources, generating cost impact models, and opening corrective actions if deviations occur.

03:27 — The three types of agents form a sequence, with each level increasing the effort to build and the impact and ROI. The sequence of building agents from retrieval to orchestration ensures a predictable and impactful implementation of AI in IT processes.

AI Agent & Copilot Summit is an AI-first event to define opportunities, impact, and outcomes with Microsoft Copilot and agents. Building on its 2025 success, the 2026 event takes place March 17-19 in San Diego. Get more details.
