Welcome to this Cloud Wars Agent and Copilot Minute. In these discussions, I’ll be analyzing opportunities, impact, and outcomes possible with AI; today I’m analyzing the evolution and maturation of Microsoft’s AI stack.
Highlights
00:18 — Microsoft’s entire AI agent stack, including Copilot Studio, Agent 365, and Copilot Cowork, has significantly advanced in a single quarter. Copilot Studio now supports multimodal orchestration with Claude Sonnet 4.6, Claude Opus, and GPT 5.2. Agent 365 has gone GA behind a new E5 licensing wall, while Copilot Cowork has shifted to usage-based billing.
01:05 — These updates highlight a small but significant shift in the skill market, indicating a maturing platform. The pattern of skill, governance, and pricing maturing — in that order — is similar to cloud infrastructure’s growth. Copilot Studio builders now choose between Anthropic or OpenAI models per task, similar to how architects choose compute regions. Agent identity is now a security parameter, reflecting the importance of governance.
02:01 — Agent 365’s E5 requirement treats every agent like an employee, with visible and variable costs. Teams can now see and defend the ROI of their automations, as agent costs are no longer buried in flat license fees. Teams should focus on orchestration patterns, models, and governance when discussing roadmaps.
02:35 — The good news: None of these new developments require a complete rebuild. If teams are already fluent in Power Platform, Copilot Studio, or D365, the new layer sits directly on top of their existing foundations.
