Last week’s Ignite conference featured a major Model Context Protocol (MCP) push by Microsoft; that push included new Dynamics 365 MCP features as well as a new Power Apps MCP Server and a Dataverse MCP Server.
We’re previously analyzed the Dynamics 365 server, so the focus here will be on Power Apps and Dataverse servers.
Microsoft’s broad-ranging support for MCP contributes to the industry’s coalescence around MCP as a means of frictionless connection from AI agents to a variety of data sources. In fact, Will Hawkins, an Agent and Copilot analyst and AI expert, says MCP is rapidly emerging as a universal interface to enterprise data in the AI era.
Power Apps MCP Server Rollout
The Power Apps MCP Server connects AI agents to the logic and data already defined within the Power Apps rapid development environment. MCP provides an intermediary layer that standardizes communication between agents and app services, removing the need for custom integrations that can delay outcomes and potentially incur significant development costs.
Power Apps MCP establishes a structured framework to expose app functionality to agents, turning apps into reusable components within the AI ecosystem. Through MCP support, AI agents will be able to invoke capabilities built into apps, such as data exploration, visualization, or even requesting human input when needed. Users will invoke agents to perform these actions, just as they would within the app itself.
Agents equipped with app capabilities via the MCP server can operate autonomously to boost productivity. Instead of users manually entering data one form at a time, an autonomous agent can identify the right information and complete forms when needed. While reading an email in Outlook, for example, users can ask Copilot to update a record in Power Apps without having to navigate to the app or manually enter data.
The Power Apps MCP Server now powers Microsoft’s agent feed, giving users control over tasks surfaced to users and support for richer experiences. It also provides agent performance metrics. The Power Apps MCP Server and agent feed are now in preview mode.
Dataverse MCP Server
Microsoft’s Dataverse MCP Server delivers a new level of integration between AI and data. Dataverse is Microsoft’s cloud-based data management platform. With the new MCP servers, users gain:
- Unified data access: MCP standardizes how platforms including Copilot Studio and GitHub Copilot interact with Dataverse. This makes enterprise data both platform agnostic and readily extensible.
- Natural language interface to Dataverse: Users can ask questions and get real-time responses from the Dataverse environment. MCP translates these requests and executes one or more built-in tools in Dataverse.
- Access to built-in Dataverse functions: the MCP server enables users to tap into built-in Dataverse tools to insert or update data in tables, view tables and their descriptions, read data from a table, search knowledge, and view and execute prompts available within Dataverse.
Dataverse MCP Server is now generally available., extending Microsoft’s broad commitment to this protocol into its data management technology.

AI Agent & Copilot Summit is an AI-first event to define opportunities, impact, and outcomes with Microsoft Copilot and agents. Building on its 2025 success, the 2026 event takes place March 17-19 in San Diego. Get more details.
